Start Your Jump Rope Routine

Are you ready to start your jump rope routine and get fit? Jumping rope is a fun and effective way to exercise, whether you’re at home, at the gym, or in your favourite outdoor spot. Not only does it improve your cardiovascular fitness, but it also strengthens your muscles, bones, and tones your body all at the same time. It’s a total body workout!

How To Start Your Jump Rope Routine

Now, let’s talk about how to start your jump rope routine. Before you begin jumping, it’s important to stretch your ankles and calves to prevent any injuries. Start by rotating your ankles in a clockwise and anticlockwise direction, about 10 times each. Then, stand facing a wall or a step and place your foot into the corner to stretch your calf muscles. Hold each side for about 30 seconds.

What You’ll Need

Now, let’s gather the things you’ll need for your jump rope routine. First, make sure you have a pair of cross training shoes with good padding and ankle support to protect your feet. Next, grab a skipping rope that is the right length for your height. You can adjust the length by following the instructions or simply tie a knot in one or both sides of the rope where the handles are.

Before you start jumping, make sure you have some music playing in the background. It can be on your phone or a stereo, but keep the volume at a reasonable level so you don’t disturb your neighbours (trust me, I’ve made that mistake before!).

  1. A pair of cross training shoes that have good padding and ankle support.
  2. A skipping rope
  3. Music on a phone, or on a stereo

How to Prepare the Rope

  • Step on the rope and hold the handles so that they reach your armpits. If there is excess on the rope you will need to adjust the length.
  • To adjust the length you will need to feed the rope into the handle as specified in the instructions or alternatively I have found and easy way to adjust the length is to tie a knot in one or two of the sides of the rope where the handles are.

How To Perform The Basic Bounce

Now, let’s learn how to perform the basic bounce. Start with the rope behind you and hold the handles in each hand. Extend your hands and forearms about a foot away from your body at a 45-degree angle. When you see the rope come past your eyes, jump over it using the balls of your feet. Remember to keep your knees straight and stand on your tip toes for a better jump. Use your hands and wrists to swing the rope over your head, but keep the movement minimal. Focus on looking straight ahead to maintain your balance and rhythm.

One important tip to remember is to be patient and take your time when you start skipping rope. Find a slow pace that works for you and gradually increase the speed as you become more comfortable. It’s all about finding your rhythm!

  • Start with the rope behind you.
  • Hold the handles in each hand. Extend your hands and forearms at least a foot away from your body at a 45 degree angle.
  • Jump over the rope as it comes towards you, I jump when I see the rope come past my eyes. Do not bend your knees, stand on your tip toes and push off with the balls of your feet to jump.
  • Use your hands and wrists to swing the rope over your head but keep your arm movement to a minimum.
  • Look straight ahead as you fall into the correct rhythm. If you watch your feet you will be more likely to lose your balance or rhythm.
